It’s There Somewhere. I Promise.

Where\'s your messy spot?

I’m convinced that everyone has some somewhere.

Clutter that is.

When people find out I am a professional organizer, confessions seem to always take place. Sometimes they confess on about others such as “Boy, does my husband need you!” or “Give me your card for my Mom.” Even so, there are others who hear what I do and feel the need to offer up a report card. They’ll say “I’m pretty organized.”

But the truth is that nearly every person who tells me that they are pretty organized usually comes back with a sentance that starts with but.

  • But, don’t look at my desk.
  • But, don’t look in the backseat of the car.
  • But, the kid’s papers…or photos….or recipes need help.

Even the most organized among us have some little spot that needs improvement. It is just that for some, they have more of those “spots” than others! When the spot turns up, I get questions. This blog is going to help you find those answers on just how to handle incoming photos, find the top of your desk or see just the perfect organizing gadget.

True confession: My sore spot is always photos. I have to make myself organize photos. I love to look at them but I don’t love to organize them.

  1. I’m a professional organizer in San Francisco, and photos are difficult (I used to be the same way). I’m pretty good when I’m storing digital pics, both in my computer and in my online albums that I put together for myself & friends, but I had boxes of photos, and it was taking me over a year to put them in albums, and I was getting pics from multiple sources (buying a few from one event, getting them as gifts in frames, etc). There’s a service called ScanDigital (http://www.scandigital.com/affiliate/48/index.php) and they scan your pics and get them back to you online and on CD. That’s helping me getting my pics back in order.

And sites like Kodak Gallery and SnapFish have thin photo albums that you can customize with cute layouts that take up a fraction of space on the bookshelf compared to traditional photo albums (and photo boxes).

    Good luck!

  2. Taking advantage of technology is a great way to deal with photos. Thanks for sharing!

I now have a folder on my desktop that is labeled “to be printed.” Periodically, when http://www.shutterfly.com sends me an email reminder of sale, then I’ll up load them to be printed.

I’ve a box labeled “incoming photos” in my closet to hold those printed photos that I have yet to organize. That way, anything coming in has a temporary home.

And, best of all, I allowed myself to let go of the notion of making photo albums or scrapbooks. I use photo boxes. For each set of photos, I type up a short description which I file with the photos in a photo box by occasion, such as 2008 Memorial Weekend.

Since I hate doing albums or scrapbooking, it was time to let that notion go! Organizing is all about making life simpler, easier and more enjoyable. Keep the routines and things you love. Let the others go or find ways to make them more manageable.
