Organizing: Garages and Clutter

pegboard-and-toolsJeff Foxworthy says “You know you are a redneck if…”

As a professional organizer, I say “You know you are disorganized if…”

One of those sayings is “You know you are disorganize if you haveĀ a garage filled with worthless junk while your car worth thousands sits outside.”

Cathythe comic strip certainly agrees with that today. One of her coworkers had taken time off to tunnel into the three car garage to fit one car in it.

After you check out the strip, be sure to check out the readers comments that follow. So many folks relate to this particular subject.

How do you organize the garage?

Sort the clutter. Ask if you love it, use it or need it. If you don’t love it, use it or need it, you don’t keep it. If you respond with “someday” in your answer, out it goes.

Divide the items you love, use and need by type. Store like items together: tools, gardening supplies, sports equipment, travel needs, hobby supplies and so on. If you only use it once a year, like holiday decorations, then think about moving it to an attic or basement so you can use your garage.

Go vertical! Make sure you use all that wall space in the garage. Pegboard, like pictured above, is easy to install and not expensive. Hang everything you can think of.

Make it a habit to put your car in the garage. When you are in that habit, you’ll quickly become annoyed when something has been placed in your parking spot. This irritation will be your motivation to keep the garage orgnaized.

Having your car in the garage is great. It isn’t burning hot, freezing cold, covered in ice or covered in bird doo. The paint and interior stays nice and the value of the car stays up. It’s safer to drive into your garage and lower the door than to walk around outside in the dark. It’s much more convenient to open the door to the garage and slip into the car than to carry everything outside.

Think of it this way. There was a good reason that house designs changed to include an attached garage. You spent a lot of money for yours. Are you getting your money’s worth?
