As a professional organizer, I can’t imagine anything more fun than organizing a famous chef’s pantry. I’ve never had that opportunity but it would be so much fun. I certainly imagine famous chefs know HOW to organize their pantry but do they have the TIME to do it?
Recently, Homestyle Magazine, asked me to share tips for organizing your pantry. When I checked out the completed article online, I was excited to see my favorite Southern chef shared the secrets of her pantry on the same page. It was almost like rubbing elbows…or ink…with Paula Deen.
The photo on this page is of a home pantry of someone who could probably be a chef as they are such an experienced cook. This explains why there are so many kinds of vinegar, oils, herbs and ingredients and why it was so hard to keep it organized. Individual baskets for the kinds of ingredients was a big help.
If you are trying to organize your pantry, here are the basics.
- Take everything out.
- Check expiration dates and pitch anything expired.
- Sort by like item: veggies together, fruit together, oils together, breakfast ingredients together and so on.
- Return them to the pantry, keeping like items together. Use baskets if need be, as in the picture.
- Label the basket. Label the shelf too so that the basket always gets back in the right spot.

The baskets make the pantry look really tidy. Nice! I find that using old bottles to store surplus packets of stuff also works well. It keeps the ingredients fresh and you can recycle your old bottles at the same time.
Thanks Debra! Old bottles are great to use. I do love to find organizing uses for things. Anything we can see through is great.
